I remember Mrs. Cowen (spelling?) from Wiley. She made us kneel down on the floor to see if our skirts touched. If our skirts didn't touch, they were not at mid-knee and we were sent home. I was sent home; my mother couldn't keep up with the growth spurt I experienced for a few months during 7th grade. Mrs. Cowen also felt our legs if she thought they were bare, because after the 1st 6 weeks of school we were not allowed to wear peds. If she did not feel stockings (remember the seams?), we were sent home. I was sent home. Also, we were not permitted to wear makeup. If I recall correctly, for our 13th birthdays many of us girls got compacts and lipstick. Guess who got sent home for wearing makeup the day after her 13th birthday? And I had Mrs. Cowen 2 years in a row!!

BTW, I think the first American indoor shopping mall was the Arcade in Cleveland, which opened in 1890.

Here's a class photo from my 5th grade class at Taylor.  Just about everyone in this photo graduated from Heights in the Class of 1970!!  I remember almost everyone's name, except for a couple of students in the bottom 2 rows.  Maybe later I'll name them all.

My fondest memory was from Wiley in orchestra when Mr Kolda would walk out and that meant we would all have to come after school for detention. All it took was one or 2 people to misbehave. I also remember Bruce Patti and I were always fighting for first chair haha) . He usually got the spot- definitely better than me. He ended up a professional musician for Dallas Symphony, I am a nurse manager for a plastic surgeons office. There ya go. He deserved it obviously!!!

Hi Everybody,

What fun reminiscing.  Remember those huge dill pickles at Severance?  Mrs. Dick and Madame Bogart at Roosevelt?  I have a sad memory of Patty Gleason dying in 8th grade.

Debbie, I remember you!

FROM STEVE FISHMAN

Well, greetings to everyone, and those that may remember me, I send regrets for not being able to attend.
I have a music gig that weekend here in North Carolina that makes it impossible for me to be there.
My best to you all.
Peace

On a totally different subject, something I'd like SOMEONE in our class to clue me in on is, what the heck did the words to "MacArthur Park" mean? I don't know how many times I've heard that song since it came out, but it still leaves me puzzled...Thanks...Jan (Semko) Ross

Janice - Seriously, I'm pretty certain that those words meant nothing at all! And given who "sang" it, I've often wondered if it was some kind of sarcastic comment on the pretensions of some of the musicians at the time. But probably not. It was pretty pretentious all on its own!

The big weekend is virtually upon us! I'm soooooo excited. If there are any former members of the Uptown Trolley out there who'll be attending and have not heard, we're having a brunch at my house on Sunday at 11 a.m. So contact me through this site and I'll fill you in. We'll miss Melodie Begleiter and Bruce Leach (z'l) very much. Also Micki (Richardson) Trowbridge and Nettie (Munstein) MacDougal, who won't be attending.

And remember to dig out the tie dye!!

What a fabulous time I had last night at Acacia Country Club. Everyone looked so great. It was so wonderful seeing all of you again. It didn't matter if you were popular, queer, a jock, a cheerleader, thin or fat, we all were on the same page. We were just so happy to see each other and share our high school stories and phone numbers. We had a great class and made a lot of super memories in the 60's and 70's. I don't think that our children had the same kind of childhood as we did. It was very special. I think that is why so many of us returned 40 years later. I went down memory lane last night and loved every minute of it.

I want to thank the Committee for doing such a great job for all of us. The venue was beautiful, the food was great and we all had a great time!! Thank you for working so hard to make our reunion so special. Looking forward to tonight. Save a dance for me. Nadine Meclovsky Lader

What a wonderful past few days... I would like to Kahngratulate everyone who was involved in making this weekend happen!! It was great seeing everyone and I hope everyone had a super time.

The memories, stories and faces have not changed much over the past 40 years which is a good thing.

What is amazing is all of the work that went in to the planning and execution of this and again thanks to each and everyone of you that donated their time and energy. I look forward to helping out on the 50th and Vic Amster told me tonight that the meetings start on Monday!!

Travel safe to all of you that came from near and far and I look forward to seeing many of you over the next few years! One of my goals is to make sure that Joe Urban shows up for the next reunion!!

How do we begin to talk about this weekend? It was the best reunion we've ever had . . . everyone talking with everyone; reconnecting with wonderful friends from elementary school; meeting people you had classes with but never really knew; realizing a friend from Heights lives right around the corner . . . it was just one wonderful experience after another! The reunion committed did a superlative job, and we had so much fun that members of the Uptown Trolley in attendance continued the reunion today with a delightful, love-filled gathering: and we sang!

So, has anyone thought about how we're all going to celebrate in two years when we turn - 60?!?!?!!!

What fun.. can't believe two years of planning is over ... and the reults were fantastic.  It was great seeing so many old friends from GGC-MC, classes we shared  and even Taylor Road Synagogue!  And I was shocked by all the people I never knew, but so happy to know you now.  It was amazing that every time I turned my head, there was another familiar face that I wanted to run and see.  So, if we were talking and I suddenly ran off... well, now you know why!

I want to thank all of you who came up to us...  and let us know how much fun you were having...  and letting me know that you enjoyed Tiger Tuesdays.  It was fun for me too!

Well I am back in Florida and tomorrow I will be back at work but I wanted to say thank you so much to all the committee members who worked so hard to bring us this fabulous website and two great nights for us to get together and reminisce.  Everything was perfect!

I love these reunions and look forward to them.  I can't believe the number of people who don't go to their high school reunions.  I guess we really did have a very different kind of childhood.  I had a wonderful time and really enjoyed seeing all of you.  I wish it didn't have to end.  Hope you all got home safe and sound.  Stay healthy and keep in touch!

Dear Tigers of 70!

I don't know about you, but this weekend's reunion was SUPER! Seeing you all, seeing how well we all have "aged" was heartening to me and I hope to you all as well. The Planning Committee deserves so much credit, even Jan Rubin, for creating an aura of magic and memories that will last us another forty years.

I hope everyone has a great rest of 2010 and I can't wait to see pictures and stories posted on the web site that will serve as a reminder that we really are the "coolest cats" in Heights' history!

What a fabulous , wonderful weekend ! Many thanks to the committee for their  hard work , great organizational skills and all the special little touches that made each event  fun and memorable.  Great seeing so many  classmates and remembering! I met a few people people I had never met before  - that was  amusing. I hope there will be a 45th - 10  years is such a long time .  Thank you again reunion committee for doing all the hard work - you are so appreciated!

Cheryl Rosenthal, yes, THAT suits my memory much better!

And I was right about Harvey Roth in the picture above, and he sent me a private hello to confirm.

I'm so happy this all turned out so wonderfully for all of you.

Even though I could not be there, just reconnecting through this website with a special little girl I knew way back when made it all worthwhile to me.

Oh, and "MacArthur Park" ...

In 1992, humorist Dave Barry conducted a poll among his readers (as recorded in Dave Barry's Book of Bad Songs) of the worst songs ever. Barry's readers selected Richard Harris' version of "MacArthur Park" as the worst song ever recorded, both in terms of "Worst Lyrics" and "Worst Overall Song".
